‘Yellowstone’ creator Taylor Sheridan knows why critics don’t like his show.

The fact cannot be denied that viewers have had varying opinions about ‘Yellowstone’ co-creator Taylor Sheridan. The high-stakes drama series may have concluded with a disappointing season, but that doesn’t mean the show failed to entertain, as the offscreen feud between Sheridan and actor Kevin Costner was enough to leave fans stunned. Sheridan, who has always been vocal about his show, understands that his work is not liked by everyone, especially critics.

In a candid conversation with Joe Rogan on ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ podcast, Sheridan discussed the success of his series, especially the critical response it received. The creator expressed disappointment towards critics, especially those from The New York Times, and commented, “They are surprised by its success. They don’t understand it. The New York Times has written several articles about him, including an essay on ‘How is this shit so popular?'”

Sheridan didn’t back down. He explained that he’s okay with the criticism because he intentionally designs his work to challenge mainstream norms and challenge traditional storytelling. According to Cinema Blend, he said, “Yellowstone is my punk rock. It’s very much about…there’s really no plot in it. ‘Don’t take my land. I want your land.’ And in that, I have a lot of opportunities to poke fun, but also to point out different perspectives and really study the way life and the world works. But there’s a lot of defiance in the way I do it. It’s not surprising that critics hate it, because it’s designed for them to hate it.”

Sheridan also described the disconnect between critics and audiences by referencing another of his series, ‘Mayor of Kingstown’. “I have a show called ‘Mayor of Kingstown’, which is about the decline of an American town, and I think it’s at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes and has a 94% audience rating. Something like that, something bananas,” Sheridan said. Though one can easily take Sheridan’s side in this discussion, as it is true that even though ‘Yellowstone’ was not initially well received by critics, fans loved the western drama series from day one.

However, Sheridan successfully united fans and critics as they came together to criticize his unnecessary cameo in the final season of Yellowstone. While the sudden change from a high-stakes narrative to a character-driven story was upsetting to fans, Sheridan’s insistence on capturing the limelight was troubling them. According to the Irish star, Sheridan’s cameo as Travis Wheatley was not limited to just a few minutes of appearance, as he literally ate up a large portion of the final episode to show his over-the-top mischief. Many expressed disappointment, arguing that the focus should have been on their favorite characters. Not only that, but supermodel Bella Hadid, who plays Sheridan’s girlfriend Sadie, was also critical of the show. That was the last straw for people who criticized the producer online.
