Yellowstone: Let’s address some admin first. What is a cameo? I’m going to focus on the definition used by Marvel fans and say it’s a role that appears momentarily in movies or TV shows. They’re not integral to the main plot, but they add a little spice along the way.
Basically, this is exactly what TV mastermind Taylor Sheridan enjoys doing on his shows. This weekend, we’ve seen his expert horse handler, Travis Wheatley, grace us with his appearance on Yellowstone season 5 episode 13. He’s ready to save the day, except his hero status isn’t as it seems – Travis forces Beth to play strip poker in exchange for helping him auction off her horses and cattle. He later reveals that he would have helped anyway, and the disgust comes out of him.

Surprisingly, though, this isn’t even his worst cameo of the week… or really, possibly ever. That’s thanks to the second season of Lioness, which finished its eight episodes with an explosive standoff on the Turkey-Iran-Iraq border. Luckily, Sheridan himself was there to be the hero this time, despite being randomly absent from the action in the previous five episodes.
Cody satisfies Sheridan’s ego in a whole new way (Yellowstone )
Sheridan takes on the role of action man Cody, not sexy cowboy, in Lioness. We first meet him when he helps Joe rescue a kidnapped congressman at the Mexican border in Season 2, Episode 1, then heads to Iran for the final moments of the war. Basically, they’re doing nothing more than showing off their strength and shooting guns.

Sound familiar? Close your eyes, or Travis and Cody could be the same people. Sheridan’s approach to getting into the show is similar, and it’s all about making himself look as good as possible. There’s horseback riding! There’s shooting! Telling a woman she doesn’t have to worry anymore because a big strong man is in charge!
But there’s something that makes Lioness’ Cody even worse. Where Travis exists in Yellowstone to push Beth’s story forward (at least, that’s the case this season), Lioness Season 2 seems like he exists to see Cody win. If I’m being honest, I didn’t care about him at all during the Los Tigres storyline, but Sheridan makes sure we’re thinking about him by the time the story is over.

We’re used to seeing a degree of self-indulgence from him, but this is taking things to another level. We might as well gather around his golden statue holding placards that say “Hail Sheridan” whenever a new episode airs. We’re feeding his ego in a whole new way… a way that feels like it should be addressed in its own time.
Wait, weren’t we supposed to follow Joe’s emotional breakthrough, as he realizes his family is more important than dying on the job every two seconds? Oh yeah! Forgot about him – that helpful guy has taken over the post-battle conversation so he can spend some time crying alone outside. What a gentleman.
Listen, it’s not all bad – I completely agree that if you’re making decisions from the other side of the camera, you have every right to make a badass cameo. But we know you’re awesome, Taylor. That’s completely evident by the fact that everything you touch turns to gold. We’ve seen your amazing talent with guns, horses and women… give us something other than a self-important hero.
